Understanding Imposter Syndrome in the Workplace
Do you constantly feel like a fraud despite your achievements? You might be experiencing Imposter Syndrome. Here is how to overcome it.
What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is the psychological pattern of doubting your accomplishments and harboring a persistent, internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud." Despite external evidence of their competence, those experiencing this syndrome remain convinced that they are deceiving others.
The Cycle of Doubt
This often leads to two extremes: overworking to compensate for perceived inadequacies, or self-sabotage and procrastination driven by the fear of failure. Both cycles ultimately lead to burnout and emotional exhaustion, particularly in highly competitive corporate environments.
Breaking the Cycle
To combat imposter syndrome, start by externalizing your thoughts. Talk to a mentor or peer; you will likely find they have felt the exact same way. Keep a "brag folder" of positive feedback and achievements to review when doubt creeps in, and reframe failure as a necessary step in the learning process.
“Your achievements are yours. You earned your place at the table.”
