How to Support a Partner With Depression (Without Losing Yourself)
Loving someone with depression is challenging. You want to fix their pain, but learning how to hold space is much more effective.
You Cannot "Fix" Them
The most common mistake partners make is trying to act as a therapist. You cannot cure their depression with logical advice, forced positivity, or grand gestures. Depression is a medical condition. Your role is to be a supportive, non-judgmental anchor while they navigate their treatment plan.
How to Communicate Effectively
Avoid saying "look on the bright side" or "other people have it worse." These statements invalidate their pain. Instead, practice active listening. Ask, "Do you just need me to listen right now, or are you looking for advice?" Sometimes, simply sitting quietly with them in the dark is the most profound support you can offer.
Protecting Your Own Mental Health
Caregiver burnout is incredibly real. If you absorb all of their emotional weight, you will eventually collapse under it. You must maintain your own hobbies, friendships, and boundaries. Do not feel guilty for feeling joyful or having a good day when they are struggling. Consider seeking your own therapy for support.
