When panic sets in, your breath is the fastest tool you have to signal to your nervous system that you are safe.

How Breathing Changes Your Brain

When you are anxious, your breathing becomes shallow and rapid, triggering the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). By intentionally slowing your breath and taking deep diaphragmatic breaths, you activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which acts as a physical brake on your body's stress response.

Exercise 1: Box Breathing

Used by athletes and first responders, Box Breathing involves four equal steps. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 4. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 4. Hold your lungs empty for a count of 4. Repeat this cycle four to five times.

Exercise 2: The 4-7-8 Method

Developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, this method is excellent for sleep and deep relaxation. Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 7 seconds. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound, for 8 seconds. This extended exhale forcefully slows your heart rate.

Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts.
