Anxiety vs. Stress: What's the Difference and How to Cope
People often use "anxiety" and "stress" interchangeably. But they are actually different experiences that require different approaches.
What Is Stress?
Stress is a response to an external trigger. A looming deadline, an argument with a family member, financial pressure, or a difficult exam — these are stressors. Once the situation is resolved, the stress typically fades. It is a normal, temporary part of life that almost everyone experiences.
What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety, on the other hand, persists even when there is no clear external threat. It is characterized by excessive, often irrational worry about things that may or may not happen. Someone with anxiety might feel a constant sense of dread, even on a calm, uneventful day.
How to Cope With Both
For stress, effective strategies include time management, regular exercise, limiting caffeine, and setting clear boundaries. For anxiety, the most effective approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, breathing techniques, and sometimes medication under a doctor's supervision.
